FAQs for Appraisals
We understand that appraisals and auction estimates can sometimes feel overwhelming or confusing. To help you navigate the process, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions our clients ask. Whether you’re seeking a formal written appraisal or simply curious about an auction estimate, these FAQs provide clarity and guidance for your next steps.
-
1. How do I register to participate in an online auction? You need to register through the Live Auctioneers platform, which is integrated with Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists’ online auctions. After registering on Live Auctioneers, you must specifically request approval to bid at Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists auctions. It’s recommended to complete the registration at least three to four hours before the auction begins to avoid delays.
-
2. Can I preview items before bidding begins?Yes, previews are available in person at the showroom on the Saturday (10-4), Monday (9-6), and Tuesday (9-4) before each auction. This allows you to inspect items closely and ask questions directly. While online photos aim to be comprehensive, in-person previews offer greater assurance.
-
3. Do you offer online bidding options for auctions? All Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists auctions are conducted as live online auctions. You can participate in real-time bidding on the Live Auctioneers platform or leave an advance bid with us to bid on your behalf up to a maximum whilst purchasing for the least possible.
-
4. What payment methods are accepted for successful bids?Local buyers are encouraged to pay in person using Visa, MasterCard, debit, or cash. For out-of-town buyers, payments under $3,000 can be made via phone using Visa or MasterCard. Payments over $3,000 require a direct wire transfer.
-
5. How does absentee bidding work?Buyers can place an advance bid by contacting Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists via phone, email, or in person. Provide your maximum bid amount, and Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists will bid on your behalf up to that limit during the live auction.
-
6. Are there any additional fees or buyer’s premiums added to my winning bid?Yes, a 20% Buyer’s Premium is added for in-house purchases. If you bid online, an additional 5% premium is charged on behalf of Live Auctioneers.
-
7. Can I inspect items in person before bidding?Absolutely. Local buyers are strongly encouraged to attend previews at the showroom, as in-person inspection often reveals details not visible online. Many in person viewers notice more items in person than online viewers.
-
8. How do I know the authenticity of the items listed for auction?Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists guarantees that items are as described in their auction listings. However, they do not authenticate items like artworks. For instance, a painting might be listed as "signed” rather than “by” an artist as there is no guarantee of its authenticity.
-
9. What is the process for picking up items after winning an auction?Local buyers are expected to pick up their items within one to two days after the auction. For out-of-town buyers, Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists delivers items to a UPS store for packing and shipping. Buyers are responsible for shipping arrangements and costs.
-
10. Can I return an item if it doesn’t meet my expectations?Items are sold on an as-is bases and on the descriptions provided in the auction listings. Buyers are encouraged to thoroughly inspect items or ask questions prior to bidding to inform themselves as to condition, provenance, etc.
This comprehensive process is designed to make selling with Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialist easy, transparent, and successful, ensuring your valuable items reach the right buyers and achieve outstanding results. Let us guide you every step of the way!

At Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists, we offer two types of evaluations: auction estimates and written appraisals. Auction estimates are free, verbal opinions designed to give you an idea of what your items might sell for at auction. Written appraisals are formal documents prepared on our letter head for insurance, probate, or asset division purposes.
• Free Auction Estimates
Auction estimates are complimentary and intended for individuals considering selling their items through Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists. These verbal evaluations are quick and straightforward, with same-day results often available for smaller collections.
• Written Appraisals
Written appraisals are charged at an hourly rate and provide formal, detailed valuations.
• Insurance Appraisals: Assess the replacement cost of an item, accounting for retail market value.
• Fair Market Value Appraisals: Estimate what an item would sell for at auction in the current market, often used for probate or asset division.
Written appraisals are typically completed within a few days to 2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project.
• At-Home Appraisals for Large Collections
For estates or extensive collections, Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists offers in-home appraisals. Auction estimates remain free, but additional travel or logistical fees may apply for on-site evaluations.
Fees for Appraisals
Items consigned to auction have a recommended 1% insurance fee of the hammer price, ensuring your valuables are protected throughout the process. You can decline this charge but your items will not be covered whilst in our possession.
Insurance Fee for Auction Consignments
All appraisals, whether auction estimates or written reports, are conducted with complete confidentiality and come with no obligation to sell through Lunds Auction & Appraisal Specialists. While we hope you’ll choose to work with us, the decision is entirely yours.
